Birth of an Orphan
This a translation of this article on my blog (in french)
How about creating a character for the RadX Orphans?
All we have to do is roll 6D6 (plus 1D3 to determine the Tone for the RadX Power), which we'll use in sequence. We'll read the categories from left to right, then from top to bottom.
- My RadX Power: 1 - I shape the shadows
- Tone: 1 - Cold
- Who was my mother? : 5 - Deliu, the Moon Panther
- My role in the team: 2 - Laughter and comfort
- A precious keepsake: 1 - Storm Lighter with Unit Alpha emblem
- My mark: 4 - Mechanical prosthesis
- Connections and contacts: 4 - Ironhead, first sergeant of the New Humans Unit Alpha
How to start with this? First of all, creating this character on my own, I'm not going to react or bounce back on other players' creations (which is a bit of a bummer, but hey ...). I already have some leads and elements that cross
To begin with, Ironhead and this lighter. He gave it to me. The day he left the unit he had been leading for years. He told me to keep it carefully, and that it would help him find me when the time came. Ironhead told me that he was going to look for my mother. He didn't say it, but it's like there was some kind of thing going on between them. And he doesn't believe the lies that the newspapers spread. "These aren't their first lies," he told me.
This lighter is a rusty antique, but it still works. Like Ironhead. One of the first New Humans, whose body is strewn with iron plates, in more or less good condition depending on their age. Only his right eye still reveals his humanity. I tried the lighter, it produces a greenish flame.
My mother was Deliu. No, is Deliu! The Moon Panther. Able to disappear in the light of the orb of night. Expert also in bladed weapons. Deadly as the panther. She comes from a distant land in the South, which I dream of going to one day. A place where it is said that the moon is very close to us.
My name is Hawa. I was born at the Agency, and early on I was given RadX injections. It hurt like hell! And soon, I saw that I could sculpt shadows. I was telling stories to the little ones among us, animating the shadows. Like short plays. My fingers would come alive almost by themselves, animating the shadows like puppets. But one day, in anger after learning that my mother had disappeared, I got angry. I created a shadow monster. It was cold. I tried to stop it. It destroyed my room. It bit my hand. Then it disappeared.
I don't have a code name yet, but I'd like to be called The Claw. Because that's what my left hand is now. After I got bitten, my hand was frozen, and the doctors had to cut it off. They put a mechanical prosthesis on me. Ironhead even helped me get it under control. Now I feel like the fine mechanisms allow me to play with the shadows even more finely. We want to get out of there. If I can control what comes out of the shadows better, we won't be the ones afraid of the monsters.
I haven't told the younger kids what happened to me with the shadow monster. That is my secret. They don't have to be afraid of the shadows. I'm here to reassure them and show them that it's okay to laugh and be amazed at what comes from the darkness.
And here is a character ready for adventure, drawn from a few rolls. We already have an NPC and a bit of general backstory, the presence of another dimension in the shadows, and a character with established personal quests. Now it's up to you to get started!

Nice write up! This IS pretty rad! One question though, can you clarify what you mean by the "tone" of the orphan powers?
I'll post a devlog about it, explaining my thoughts about it (and an example). I'm still writing the developed game.
Fair enough. I just got excited with the possibilities!
In a nutshell, it's a concept I took from Swords Without Master. The Tone is a word that will shape the fiction, the universe. When it's triggered, the Tone is applied to the whole scene : with the Cold Tone, ice could form where there is water, the weather would change, chill with go through spines...
It's a narrative tool, to show how the powers of the RadX are overwhelming the characters. It's kinda like when, in a comic book, a mutant (like Phoenix ?) has too much power and can't control it.
That's a clever cross-over! A literal visual of the tone. Sounds fun!
